After six-month preparation, the signing ceremony of the project “Healthy Guangdong — Qingyuan General Practitioner Transition Training and Adult Undergraduate Education for Community Clinical Medical Science” was held in Qingyuan People’s Hospital on December 9, 2014. The project is jointly sponsored by Guangdong Hopson Pearl River Education and Development Foundation, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and Qingyuan Municipal People’s Government. Prof. Huang Daren, President of Guangdong Hopson Pearl River Education and Development Foundation; Mr. Ge Changwei, Secretary of the CPC Qingyuan Municipal Committee; Ms. Chen Jianhua, Deputy Mayor of Qingyuan; Prof. Yu Minbin, Vice President of SYSU; Prof. Xiao Haipeng, Party Secretary of The First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU; and Prof. Li Guanhong, Deputy Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine of SYSU, attended the ceremony with 150 students and teachers.

Prof. Yu Minbin introduced the implementation of the project. Sun Yat-sen University and Guangdong Hopson Pearl River Education and Development Foundation jointly initiated the “Healthy Guangdong — Service Capability Enhancement Project for Local Communities” in Meizhou in June, 2011, which was well received by grassroots medical workers. In order to enable the service to cover more underdeveloped areas, the project “Healthy Guangdong — Qingyuan General Practitioner Transition Training and Adult Undergraduate Education for Community Clinical Medical Science” is now launched for the purpose of training 600 medical backbones for community hospitals in Qingyuan within 5 years.  

Prof. Huang Daren said that the success launch of the project was the result of the joint efforts of the three sponsors. He hoped that the trainees and students in the Project would treasure the opportunity to improve their clinical skills and serve the community better.

Ms. Chen Jianhua pointed out that the grassroots medical service needs to be improved and high quality medical talents are urgently needed for the development of health and medical service in Qingyuan.

According to statistics, at present, the doctors with undergraduate degrees in Qingyuan’s grassroots medical organizations take up only 11.8% of the total medical workers. There are only 327 general practitioners, far from the goal of having two general practitioners for every 10,000 people. The launch of the project will enhance Qingyuan’s community medical service and lay a good foundation for enabling people to enjoy high quality medical service near home.
