On January 7, 2015, the second SYSU Clinical Research Salon was held on North Campus, attracting about 100 faculty (including visiting fellows, course trainees and others) from SYSU and its affiliated hospitals. The salon was scheduled to have two topics and chaired by Associated Professor Yan Guo from the School of Public Health and Professor Chao Cheng from The First Affiliated Hospital, who were one-year visiting fellows of the first cohort.

The first topic was about Medical English learning, introduced by Dr. Daya Yang, a cardiologist in The First Affiliated Hospital, who had taken the job of simultaneous interpreting in academic meetings for many times and had good experience in English learning. Dr. Yang introduced himself in English as an example and gave phonetic tips such as the “antepenultimate rule” in medical terms. For the second topic, Prof. Qing Liu talked about the Design of Phase 2 Clinical Trial, and shared a research case conducted by the faculty of our university, which interested the audience and sparked lively discussions, leading to a climax of the salon.

After the salon, the organizers and audience both found that this kind of academic communication and exchange was useful and beneficial. All kinds of interesting topics on clinical research come out and will be put into agenda in future salons.

It is reported that in the  Phase I collaboration between Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the program sent more than 40 faculty from SYSU as visiting fellows to JHU for study and training on clinical research. After finishing the training in JHU, these fellows came back to SYSU and advocated to organize the SYSU Clinical Research Salon, aiming to continue the academic atmosphere and activities in JHU and spread the knowledge and experience of clinical research to SYSU. Therefore, the salons will be in the form of presentations and discussions rather than traditional lectures. It is set to be held on the first Wednesday of each month regularly. The salon is agreed and supported by the collaboration program and was launched for the first time in December 2014 with the witness of professors and members from both sides.
