Recently, the da Vinci Si has been used in surgeries at The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), which marks the beginning of the "robotic era" of surgeries in South China. The Da Vinci Si is a robotic surgical system developed by Intuitive Surgical in collaboration with IBM, MIT and Heartport. It consists of a surgeon’s console, a patient cart with four interactive robotic arms, and a high-performance vision system. It enables the surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control. Before the da Vinci Si was officially put into use in The First Affiliated Hospital, a group of surgeons and nurses were sent to The Chinese University of Hong Kong to receive robotic surgery training. They have attended the courses and received certifications.

Recently, Prof. He Yulong and Prof. Tan Min from the Gastrointestinal Surgery Center, Prof. Kuang Ming and Prof. Peng Baogang from the Division of Liver Surgery, Prof. Yin Xiaoyu from the Division of Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery, and Prof. Qiu Shaopeng from the Division of Urologic Surgery, have performed more than ten surgeries using the da Vinci Si, with a success rate of 100%.
