Invited by Professor Xu Yuesheng of the School of Mathematics and Computer Science, Professor Stephen Smale, world-famous mathematician, winner of Fields medal and Wolf prize and academician of American National Academy of Sciences, visited SYSU on academic purpose on May 19. As the fifth expert the “Forum of International Outstanding Computing Scientists” has invited, Professor Smale gave an academic lecture on “Geometry of Data”, which introduced the achievements in mathematic theories of statistic learning in recent years. The lecture was well received by the teachers and students. After the lecture, Professor Smale visited Professor Xu’s office and conducted in-depth communication with members of Professor Xu’s team.

As one of the most outstanding mathematicians, Professor Smale has made great contribution to the fields of differential topology, dynamical systems, chaos theory, non-linear analysis, computational complexity, mathematical economics as well as statistic learning, especially on topology and dynamical systems. He successfully solved the Poincare conjecture in a wide sense and established modern abstract theory of differential dynamical system

Hereafter, “Forum of International Outstanding Computing Scientists” will launch a series of lectures by world top computing scientists and conduct academic discussions to further activate academic atmosphere and enhance SYSU’s academic status in this field.
