Recently, Ministry of Science and Technology has published the appraisal result of 2011 National Key Labs of Bioscience and Medical Science. The result of three national key labs of Sun Yat-sen University (National Key Laboratory of Biocontrol and Resources Utilization, South China Oncology National Key Laboratory and National Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology) was good.

This year, Ministry of Science and Technology authorized Natural Science Foundation to appraise national key laboratories in bioscience and medical science field. 30 labs in bioscience field and 26 labs in medical science field participated in the appraisal. 7 labs of bioscience were classed as excellent national key labs, 20 were classed as good ones. National Key Lab of Livestock Epidemic Disease and Pathogeny Biology, National Key Lab of Agricultural Insect Pest and Rat Comprehensive Treatment Study and National Key lab of Crop Genetic and Germplasm Creation were required to rectify and reform. The results of the three labs were undetermined. National Key Lab of Freshwater Ecology and Biotechnology and National Key Lab of Crop Genetic Improvement applied for an inspection exemption for they were classed as excellent key labs three times before. According to the National Key Laboratories Appraisal Rules, the two labs were appraised as excellent labs this time. 6 labs in medical science field were classed as excellent national key labs, 18 were good ones. National Key Lab of Medical Genetics was required to rectify and reform. The appraisal result was undetermined. National Key Lab of Virus Gene Engineering was classed as poor one.

Ministry of Science and Technology is going to offer a special fund for national key labs that were classed as excellent or good ones. Correspondingly, special funds for four key labs, which are needed to be improved, will be reduced during the rectification. Ministry of Science and Technology will appraise the improvement in two years. The country will disqualify some national key labs that failed in the appraisal.
