On the afternoon of July 2, the unveiling ceremony of Centre for Oceanian Studies was held in SYSU. Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of SYSU, Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU, Su Caifang, Deputy Director General of Foreign Affairs Office of Guangdong Provincial People's Government (GDFAO), and Ms Jill Collins, Australia’s Consul-General in Guangzhou, attended the ceremony. Leaders of relevant departments of Guangdong Provincial Government, representatives of experts and professors from China and foreign countries, heads of relevant units, schools and departments of SYSU, and teachers and students from School of Asia-Pacific Studies took part in the ceremony. The unveiling ceremony was moderated by Vice President Wei Minghai.

Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of SYSU addressed the ceremony, stating that the university attaches great importance to teaching and research on regional and international issues. Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU and Director of Centre for Oceanian Studies, briefly introduced its background and preparatory work. Su Caifang, Deputy Director General of GDFAO, and Ms Jill Collins, Australia’s Consul-General in Guangzhou, delivered a speech respectively, and joined the two Vice Presidents to unveil SYSU Centre for Oceanian Studies.

It is learned that in order to contribute to China’s diplomatic strategies, promote openness in education, and boost regional and country studies, the government supports relevant universities and research institutions to cultivate and construct research bases of regional and country studies, which will become think tanks with professional advantages and important influences in their fields, and play a multifunctional role in academic research, talent cultivation, decision-making consultation and international communication. SYSU Centre for Oceanian Studies has been listed in the first batch of key cultivation bases of regional and country studies by the Ministry of Education.
