On December 6th to 7th, the 2012 International Symposium on Fire Science and Engineering was successfully held in Guangzhou. The international symposium was hosted by Sun Yat-sen University, and organized by Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Fire Science and Technology, co-organized locally by University of Science and Technology of China, Wuhan University, and Northeastern University, and supported by Chinese Association of Fire Protection and Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering of City University of Hong Kong. The symposium is presided over by Professor Liang Dong, Party Secretary of School of Engineering of Sun Yat-sen University, and Director of Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Fire Science and Technology. More than 130 experts and scholars from The University of New South Wales in Australia, Ramboll UK Ltd in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong Fire Services Department, Hong Kong Buildings Department, City University of Hong Kong, Sun Yat-sen University, Wuhan University, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Beijing Jiaotong University, Northeastern University, Southwest Jiaotong University etc. attended the international symposium.

On the morning of December 6th, the opening ceremony of the symposium was held in Southern Club Hotel Business Class in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, and chaired by Professor Liang Dong. Professor Sun Jin-hua from University of Science and Technology of China, and Professor Lo Siu-ming from City University of Hong Kong made speeches.

The main theme of this symposium is “Scientific Development and Engineering Applications in Fire Safety”. During the symposium, the participants had heated discussions on several topics, including mechanism of experimental fires, fire detection alarm and extinguishing systems, evacuation model and software application, and the latest research trends and developments in fire science and engineering fields. This symposium provided a communication platform for experts, scholars and graduate students, explored the new trend of the fire alarm system, and promoted the development of fire-fighting technology and smoke prevention.

On the morning of December 7th, the delegates were invited to visit the new firefighting and rescue equipments in Guangdong Special Firefighting and Rescue Detachment, and received a warm reception. During the visit, Deputy Director Liu Xing-hua of the Department of Fire Evidence Investigation of Guangdong Provincial Public Security Fire Prevention Battalion, and relevant leaders from Fire Corps of Guangdong Province of Special Firefighting and Rescue Detachment discussed and communicated with the delegates.

The symposium received more than 110 English papers, in which 82 papers were selected after review by the Conference Academic Committee. In addition, all the selected papers will be published, and recommended to EI.
