The CPC Central Committee and the State Council held the 2012 National Science and Technology Awards Conference in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on January 18, 2013. Leaders of the CPC and the state Hu Jintao, Xi Jinping, Wen Jiabao, Li Keqiang and Liu Yunshan attended the conference and presented awards to representatives of the award winners.

The conference granted the 2012 State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, State Natural Sciences Award, State Technology Invention Award, State Science and Technology Progress Award, and International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. Two scientific research achievements of Sun Yat-sen University were granted the second prize of State Natural Sciences Award (the first prize vacant), and they were: “Origin and Evolution of Vertebrate Immunity” completed by the research team led by Professor Xu Anlong and “Chemical Simulation of Metalloenzymes and its Structure-Activity Relationships” completed by the research team led by Professor Mao Zongwan.

The state granted 41 second prizes of 2012 State Natural Sciences Award in total (the first prize vacant). SYSU got two State Natural Sciences Awards, ranked second in all award-winning institutions nationwide. They were also the only two State Natural Sciences Awards in Guangdong Province this year.

SYSU won the second prize of State Natural Sciences Award in both 2011 and 2012, which shows the increasing ability of the University’s original innovation in science and technology. It is the outcome of the continuous efforts of the University’s researchers, and also the result of the close attention of the University leadership, the implementation of science and technology policies and the careful organization of awarding scientific and technological achievements.
