From Jan. 13th to 19th, the 7th Annual Workshop on Ore Deposit Models and Exploration, which was co-sponsored and jointly organized by the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits (SGA), Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Geological Society of Guangdong Province, was successfully held in Guangzhou South Campus, SYSU. More than 200 delegates both at home and abroad from more than 40 universities, research institutes, geological survey agencies and other government-related organizations attended the symposium. Prof. Li Wenjun (Assistant President of SYSU), Academician Steven Scott (Professor of Toronto University), Prof. Xu Yigang (Director of GIG, CAS), and Du Haiyan (Chief Engineer of Guangdong Provincial Geological Bureau) gave welcome speeches at the opening ceremony.
During the one-week workshop, a group of 16 distinguished experts and scholars from U.S., Canada, Australia, and China, headed by Prof. Steven Scott (Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada), Dr. David Leach (U.S. Geological Survey, former president of SGA), Dr. Richard Goldfarb (U.S. Geological Survey, former president of SEG), and Dr. Noel White (Chief Exploration Geologist at BHP Minerals), delivered a series of lectures on the latest advances and major achievement in the studies of ore deposit models and their successful applications to mineral exploration. Nearly 1,000 typical ore specimens and geological maps related to a great diversity of world-class ore deposits have also been displayed in conjunction with corresponding lectures.

With a fresh and exciting program planned, abundant useful information presented, as well as efficient organizing work performed, this high-rated, lively workshop not only featured an impressive line-up of high-level guest lecturers to enlighten delegates, but also provided great opportunities for young geologists, new professionals and graduate students to exchange new scientific ideas and to gain a better understanding of the metallogenesis and genetic models for various types of ore deposits.
