With the support of Guangdong’s policy and measures to construct key disciplines, key talents, key platforms and major scientific projects, the discipline development at Sun Yat-sen University has made a new breakthrough. According to the latest statistics (January 2014-February 2014) released on May 8th by Essential Science Indicators (ESI), SYSU’s total number of papers that were included in ESI in 7 disciplines, namely, Clinical Medicine, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Neuroscience & Behavior, Immunology, Plant and Animal Science, and Social Sciences, General, was ranked in top five in universities of the "985 Project". In particular, SYSU’s original innovation academic influence in Medicine as well as the interdisciplinary fields of Medicine and Biology has risen. Several disciplines at SYSU entered top three nationwide, among which, the total number of papers and the total number of citations of papers in both Clinical Medicine and Immunology were ranked No. 2, and the average citation rate per paper in Immunology was ranked No. 1.

Since the launch of the policy of constructing key disciplines, key talents, key platforms and major scientific projects in Guangdong province, SYSU has taken solid steps in reform and innovation. First, develop discipline clusters, promote interdisciplinary integration, and focus on Medicine and the interdisciplinary fields of Medicine and Biology. Second, introduce high-level talents. Since the implementation of the policy, SYSU has recruited more than 80 high-level leading talents and outstanding young talents from overseas. Third, promote internationalization. SYSU worked with Johns Hopkins University to establish the International Joint Research Center for Translational Medicine at SYSU, the first national center for international joint research in Guangdong province. Fourth, enhance collaborative innovation, and actively participate in major projects of healthcare collaborative innovation in Guangzhou. Fifth, strengthen talent cultivation on the basis of constructing key platforms, and encourage students to participate in scientific research to improve their innovative and practical abilities.
