In the morning on June 30, the opening ceremony of 2014 Guangdong Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology and Environmental Geology Seminar was held in Swasey Hall, Sun Yat-sen University. Over 130 experts and scholars from Guangdong, Hong Kong and other provinces attended the seminar.
Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of SYSU, addressed the opening ceremony. He hoped that the leaders in this field would enhance industry-university-research collaborations with the School of Earth Science and Geological Engineering of SYSU.

Mr. Wu Weihua, Deputy Director of Guangdong Geological Bureau, introduced the development and planning of Guangdong Geological Bureau and proposed to make five breakthroughs from the perspectives of big geology, big resources and big ecology.

Hydrogeology, engineering geology and environmental geology are applied disciplines of geology that involve the relationship between man and nature. The ongoing constructions in big and small cities in Guangdong province bring challenges to hydrogeology, engineering geology and environmental geology. This seminar is significant for tackling geological problems brought by economic development, maintaining sustainable development and realizing scientific and harmonious development of man and nature.

In the afternoon, the participants had discussions in two parallel sessions in the School of Earth Science and Geological Engineering at SYSU.

The attendees also included Prof. Wang Guiling from The Institute of Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences; Prof. Huang Changsheng, Director of Department of Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology, Wuhan Center, China Geological Survey; Prof. Jimmy Jiao from Department of Earth Sciences, The University of Hong Kong; Prof. Zhang Ke, Dean of School of Earth Science and Geological Engineering, SYSU; and Mr. Tang Rui, Secretary of School of Earth Science and Geological Engineering, SYSU.
