A Successful Hosting of the 2014 "Influence ? China" Autumn Summit

Co-hosted by Sun Yat-sen Business School and Time Weekly, the 2014 “Influence ? China” Autumn Summit was held at the International Conference Hall of SYSBS on September 11. The noted speakers in attendance were Prof. Edmund S. Phelps (2006 Nobel Prize Laureate for Economic Sciences), Prof. Christopher A. Pissarides (2010 Nobel Prize Laureate for Economic Sciences), Prof. Xiangsong Zuo (Professor of Economics, Renmin University of China) and Prof. Li Ding (Director of the Research Department of Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences).
 
Introducing this year’s theme of “Innovation and New Normal”, the forum was inaugurated by Bingliang Jin (Party Secretary of Times Media) and SYSBS Executive Dean Zhongfei Li. Prof. Xiangsong Zuo presented a lecture titled “Four Big Puzzles and One Possible Answer – An International Monetary Approach to Understanding Global Economic Imbalance and Secular Declining of Productivity and Real GDP Growth”. His remarks focused on the global economic slowdown, the imbalance between financial assets and domestic real capital, the decrease of global real interest rates, and “The Edmund Phelps Puzzle”.

In a speech titled “The Situation and Mission of Today’s Reform”, Prof. Li Ding stated his views on development patterns, which he believes should be based on "homegrown” innovation. In addition, he is optimistic that efficiency and fairness can be unified under the condition of state ownership, emphasizing the magnitude of the structural reform of government and state-owned enterprise.

Prof. Christopher A. Pissarides spoke on the subject of “Transition to a Post-Industrialized Society”, pointing out in his lecture that developing high-tech and high-end manufacturing should be the focal point of China’s economic transition.

To close the speech session, Prof. Edmund S. Phelps demonstrated his insightful view of innovation and the new normal economy. His suggestions highlighted the importance of combining the innovation of both enterprise and government, which is also the key point to making the new normal a healthier economic condition.

In the round table discussion session, under the themes of “How to Recognize the New Normal of the Chinese Economy”, "How to Solve the Problem of the Unemployment Rate” and “How to Consider the Innovation Ability of the Canton Area”, the four accomplished scholars presented their views from the vantage point of their specific expertise.
