Prof. Naomi J. Halas gave a lecture in the 2nd International Masters Frontier Forum at SYSU

On the evening of October 12, 2014, the 2nd International Masters Frontier Forum, co-organized by School of Physics and Engineering and Office of International cooperation & Exchange, was held in Fulan Academic Center, Fengsheng Hall, Sun Yat-sen University.

The forum invited Prof. Naomi J. Halas, member of National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, American Academy of Arts and Sciences as the speaker. The forum was presided over by Prof. Chongjun Jin from School of Physics and Engineering, and attracted more than 200 teachers and students from School of Physics and Engineering, and School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

Prof. Halas gave a lecture entitled “Harvesting light at the nanoscale”. She showed us broad scientific researches from the localized surface plasmon resonance of gold nano-particles, absorption of light, vaporizing of water into steam, and H2O-ethanol distillation as well as killing cancer cells via the gold nanoparticles illuminated by light. Her lecture kindled students' minds in nano-photonics. After the lecture, the teachers and students actively asked questions and discussed related scientific issues with Prof. Halas.

Naomi J. Halas is the Stanley C. Moore Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Professor of Chemistry, Professor of Physics and Astronomy, and founding director of the Laboratory for Nanophotonics at Rice University. She was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2014, the National Academy of Sciences in 2013 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009. She is the Principal Investigator of an NSF-funded integrative graduate education and research training grant (IGERT) in Nanophotonics.
