Symposium held to commemorate the 100 anniversary of the birth of Prof. Gao Zhaolan

On November 2, the School of Physics and Engineering and the State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies (OEMT) of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) hosted a symposium in Swasey Hall on South Campus to commemorate the 100 anniversary of the birth of Prof. Gao Zhaolan, renowned spectrophysicist and founder of the former State Key Laboratory of Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy of SYSU.
Mr. Lu Ruihua, former Governor of Guangdong Province and student of Prof. Gao Zhaolan; Prof. Gong Qihuang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor at Peking University; Prof. Zhang Jinxiu, former Vice President of SYSU; Prof. Zhang Chunxiang, former Vice President of SYSU; Prof. Zhu Xiping, Vice President of SYSU; Prof. Yu Zhenxin, Director of the former State Key Laboratory of Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy; Mrs. Chan Lau Sau Yuen, SYSU alumna; Mr. Feng Gaoyi, son of Prof. Gao Zhaolan; Prof. Li Baojun, Dean of School of Physics and Engineering; Mr. Ouyang Kequan, Secretary of School of Physics and Engineering; Prof. Yu Siyuan, Director of OEMT; Prof. Lai Tianshu, Head of Department of Optics and Optical Engineering; friends, relatives, colleagues and students of Prof. Gao Zhaolan; faculty members and students from Department of Optics and Optical Engineering, a total of more than 200 people attended the event.

Before the symposium, the unveiling ceremony of the bronze statue of Prof. Gao Zhaolan was held in the Lasers and Spectroscopy Institute. Lu Ruihua, Zhu Xiping, Li Baojun, Yu Zhenxin, Yu Siyuan and Feng Gaoyi jointly unveiled the bronze statue of Prof. Gao Zhaolan.
Mr. Lu Ruihua, Prof. Yu Zhenxin and Prof. Li Baojun gave a speech respectively. They reviewed Prof. Gao Zhaolan’s great achievements in academic research and optical education, praised her noble character, and encouraged young teachers and students to make contributions to the development of optics and optical engineering at SYSU.
A video made by the Laboratory of Optical Information Science and Technology was also played to introduce Prof. Gao Zhaolan’s life, which consists of precious video and audio recordings of Prof. Gao Zhaolan and her students in the laboratory.
At the symposium, Prof. Gong Qihuang and Prof. Lai Tianshu gave an academic lecture respectively. After the symposium, the guests visited the State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies and the National Physics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center at SYSU.
