Professor Dong Wenjie from SYSU’s School of Atmospheric Sciences Attends the COP21 Climate Conference in Paris

From November 30th to December 11th, 2015, the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) and the 11th Session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP11) took place in Paris, France. Professor Dong Wenjie from School of Atmospheric Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was invited to attend the conference.

On December 4th, Prof. Dong Wenjie was invited to give a presentation in the China Pavilion at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris. Based on data from The Third National Assessment Report of Climate Change, Prof. Dong Wenjie talked about how the development of the newest generation of climate modeling—the earth system model—is applied in climate change research in China. He introduced methods for using the earth system model to conduct numerical simulations to assess the historical responsibility for climate change by developed countries and developing countries; what commitments toward reducing emissions can match a country’s historical responsibility; whether emissions reduction work can return our climate systems to their previous states; and how to develop the climate models which satisfy the demands of human in the future. 

The Third National Assessment Report of Climate Change was jointly published by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the China Meteorological Administration, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering on November 20th , 2015. Prof. Dong Wenjie is the leading author of the “data and methods” part of this special report.

The newly established School of Atmospheric Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University will adhere to the requirements and planning strategies of the University, exploring internationally advanced research topics in Atmospheric Sciences, oriented toward national strategic needs, and serving the regional socio-economic development of Guangdong province. The School will respond to climate change, the "One Belt and One Road" economic and trade initiative, as well as the sustainable development of the ecological environment in the South China Sea and its surrounding region, contributing to cultivating talents of atmospheric sciences who have both ability and moral integrity, able to cultivate charisma and eager serve their country.
