The First Affiliated Hospital and Yangcheng Evening News Joined Hands to Treat CHD Children in Boluo County

On January 19th, The First Affiliated Hospital and Yangcheng Evening News joined their hands again and organized a treatment activity for children with congenital heart disease (CHD) in Boluo County, Huizhou City. Experts performed on-site examination for children suspected of having CHD initially screened by local health centers. Eight of them are suitable for surgery and will be moved to The First Affiliated Hospital to receive treatment. The “Love Help Children’s Hearts” public welfare foundation of The First Affiliated Hospital is about to provide 12,000-15,000 yuan of financial aid to each needy child.
It is learned that this is the second joint treatment activity for CHD children in poverty-stricken areas launched by The First Affiliated Hospital and Yangcheng Evening News. In December 2011, the two sides first conducted CHD screening in Dianbai County, and attracted wide attention from all walks of life to poverty-stricken CHD children through media appealing, experts taking the lead and public participation.

On the morning of that day, the launch ceremony of treatment activity for CHD children was held in the People’s Hospital of Boluo County. Yu Jialiang, Deputy Head of Boluo County; Hu Quan, General Manager of Yangcheng Evening News Advertising Company; Professor Wu Zhongkai, Director of the Pediatric Cardiac Surgical Department of the First Affiliated Hospital, delivered a speech respectively, calling on the society to bring resources together to give love and care to CHD children, especially to provide favorable conditions for the healthy growth of poverty-stricken CHD children.
Under the promotion of Yangcheng Evening News and the Health Bureau of Boluo County, the health centers in all towns across Boluo County had already performed initial screening for children in the county. Accompanied by their family members, over 20 children suspected of having CHD came early to the site of the activity. Professor Wu Zhongkai and Associate Professor Yao Jianping from Pediatric Cardiac Surgical Department, Associate Professor Zhu Ling from Cardiac Pediatric Department, doctor Yao Fengjuan from Ultrasonic Department, senior nurse Liang Huiling and other health care experts from The First Affiliated Hospital examined the children one by one on the site, drew up treatment plans for 8 children who were suitable for surgery and made arrangements for them to come to The First Affiliated Hospital for treatment as soon as possible.
In March 2011, The First Affiliated Hospital used donations from GF Fund Management and Country Garden as initial capital and established the “Love Help Children’s Hearts” special foundation, with the aim to help CHD children who are 14 years old or under from poor families to receive corrective heart operations. Since its establishment, it has assisted over 100 poverty-stricken CHD children from Huaiji, Lianzhou, Fengshun, Yunan, Dianbai, Meixian, Chaoyang, Chaonan, Puning, Yingde, Huizhou, Qingyuan, Dongyuan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Hunan and other regions to complete their surgical treatment. The success rate of the surgeries is 100% with positive social reaction.
