With the aim to “enhance understanding, promote communication, establish cooperation and achieve mutual benefit”, the 1st Academic Forum between The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and Prince of Wales Hospital of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was successfully held in The Third Affiliated Hospital on August 10, 2013. Attendees of the forum include Yu Jun, professor in the Department of Medicine at CUHK; Alfred Sze-lok Cheng, associate professor in the Institute of Digestive Disease at CUHK; Zhang Qi, deputy director of the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange of SYSU and deputy director of the Liver Disease Laboratory; Wu Bin, assistant president of The Third Affiliated Hospital and director of the Department of Gastroenterology; Chong Yutian, assistant president of The Third Affiliated Hospital; Gao Zhiliang, director of Department of Infectious Diseases; Wei Hongbo, director of Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Department of Surgery; Xu Ruiyun, director of Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery; Zhao Zhixin, deputy director of Department of Infectious Diseases; Huang Yuehua, assistant president of Liver Diseases Hospital.

Deputy Director Zhang Qi delivered the opening address. She first expressed sincere welcome to the attendees of the forum and pointed out that CUHK has always been a strategic partner of SYSU. Remarkable achievements have been made since the cooperation council between the two universities was established back in 2007. Stable, long-term collaborations between the two universities have been built in 11 academic areas including oncology, traditional Chinese medicine, gastroenterology, biotechnology, sociology, food safety, and etc.
Prof. Yu Jun, Prof. Alfred Cheng, Dr. Zhang Xiang and Dr. Shen Jiayun from Prince of Wales Hospital delivered a keynote speech respectively on “NASH research in Institute of Digestive Diseases, CUHK”, "Cell Cycle-Related Kinase: At the Crossroads between Infection, Regulatory Circuits and Transformation”, "Roles of Interferon γ-inducible Protein 10 (IP-10) in the Progression of Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis” and “Non-invasive diagnosis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis by combined serum biomarkers”. Prof. Wu Bin, Prof. Chong Yutian, Prof. Wei Hongbo, Prof. Xie Dongying, Prof. Zhang Qi, Prof. Huang Yuehua, Prof. Zhao Zhixin, Dr. Lu Yi and Dr. Yang Yidong reported respectively on “Research Status in Department of Gastroenterology, the Third Affiliated Hospital of SYSU”, "A long-term cohort study of chronic hepatitis B in south China: what do we have and what can we do”, "Clinical Application of Laparoscopic Pancreatoduodenectomy”, "Research Status and Development Direction of Infectious Diseases Dept. of SYSU”, "The multiple roles of cancer associated fibroblasts in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma”, "Molecular mechanisms of HBV core promoter mutations associated hepatocellular carcinoma”, "An introduction of clinical research on hepatitis C in infectious diseases department of SYSU”, "Correlation between Stromal Activated Hepatic Stellate Cells and Angiogenesis in Hepatocellular Caricinoma” and “Epigenetic inactivation of CLDN3, a candidate tumor suppressor gene, is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma”. Both groups had an in-depth communication on the clinical and basic research of gastroenterology and hepatobiliology.
The forum is co-sponsored by The Third Affiliated Hospital, SYSU and Prince of Wales Hospital, CUHK, hosted by the Office of Discipline Construction and International Cooperation, The Third Affiliated Hospital of SYSU. Both parties agreed to host the forum in turn and expand the collaboration to other disease areas and disciplines, providing a cooperation platform for scientific research teams of both hospitals.
