Sun Yat-sen University Starts International Student Recruitment Tour in Thailand

After the successful international recruitment promotion for year 2016 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last month, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) sent out its team again to start the new round of four-day promotion in Thailand from November 8. Led by Dr. Wu Xiaoyan, director of International Students’ Affairs Office (ISO), Dr. Gao Guoquan, associate dean of the School of Medicine, and Mr. Jia Jia, recruitment officer of ISO, the delegation visited Thai universities and high schools, attended educational fairs held in different cities and met with the Thai Medical Council and Dental Council members in Bangkok.

Sun Yat-sen University signed a collaborative agreement with Khon Kaen University in May 2013 to establish jointly the South Asia Tropical Disease Research Centre and Medical Education Research Centre. This time the delegation visited the University again on November 9, aiming to seek for further expansion of cooperation between the two universities. Dr. Nawarat Wara-aswapati Charoen, vice president of Khon Kaen Unviersity, accompanied by Dr. Teekayu Plangkoon Jorns, assistant to the president, and deans from Faculty of Medicine, Education and International College, received the delegation and had a productive discussion for the future cooperation.

Two days later, the delegation visited the Faculty of Medicine of Chiang Mai University in the north of Thailand and reached a preliminary intent of research cooperation in medical sciences and student exchange.

The delegation also participated in a few educational fairs, visited Thai local schools to meet the teaching councilors and gave presentations to students who were interested in going to study in China. In the recent years China has become one of the most attractive destinations of education for Thai students. Due to Sun Yat-sen University’s favorable location of being close to Thailand and its similarity of climate and food, many Thai students prefer to study at SYSU for degree programs, among which the most popular ones are BA programs of MBBS, tourism management, Chinese language, etc. Currently there are over 250 Thai students studying at SYSU at all levels, ranking the second largest international student population at the university.
In Bangkok, the delegation met with Dr. Prasobsri Ungthavorn, First Vice President of the Thai Medical Council and Dr. Narumanas Korwanich D.D.S., Dental Board Advisor of Thai Dental Council Committee to talk about the regulations regarding accreditation of foreign medical students and academic collaboration with Thai universities. Both parties admitted that this was a very productive meeting and were happy to have the opportunity to share ideas and get known better to each other.
