Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) held a graduation ceremony for the class of 2024 on June 22, with over 16,000 graduates receiving bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The ceremony was also streamed live via multiple social media platforms.

In his speech at the ceremony, Gao Song, president of the university, extended his congratulations to the graduates on the completion of their academic studies at SYSU.

Gao said that the graduation ceremony for class of 2024 is special and meaningful since this year marks a centenary of SYSU.

Gao encouraged the graduates with the centenary legacy of SYSU, “Soaring Peaks, Everlasting Streams”. He said that the pursuit of this vision requires the joint efforts of all members of the university. He hopes that the graduates of class 2024, should be patriotic, pragmatic, rational, open-minded, independent as well as responsible, striving to serve the country, make impact on the world and lead the future.

He expressed that the centenary is a new start point for the university, and that the graduates will embark on a new journey and start a new chapter of their lives at the upcoming graduation. He called on graduates of class of 2024 to “set out again” together with the university.

On behalf of the CPC SYSU committee, Gao also called on graduates to firm up their ideals and convictions, maintain the pioneering and hardworking spirits, as well as to contribute to write the youth chapter of the Chinese path to modernization.

He said that he benefited a lot from the comprehensive disciplines and the philosophy of fostering students' creativity, as well as enhancing their abilities in learning, thinking and taking action, which enabled him to master expertise and skills in fields of agronomy, life sciences and computer science during his undergraduate studies.

Shang Yuanjun, a representative of master degree graduates from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, shared her memorable experience of providing medical services by ophthalmic patrol vehicles in Tibet in April this year. She urged the graduated to engage in social practices and serve the needs of the country.
