On May 20, a love story spanning cultures and continents unfolds at the Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology at Sun Yat-sen University (IFCEN, SYSU), where Alexander Gewirtz and Océane Gewirtz—affectionately named "Dashan" and "Haiyang" by their students—have been shaping minds and bridging Sino-French ties for nearly 15 years.

Drawn by their deep affection for China, this French academic couple relocated to China in 2010, with Dashan teaching mathematics and Haiyang physics at IFCEN, SYSU. Fifteen years on, they remain beloved figures at the institute, honored as "Most Popular Teachers" for their dedication to education and cross-cultural collaboration.

Over the years, they witnessed IFCEN’s growth, contributing through textbook compilation, dedicated teaching, and nurturing generations of nuclear engineering talents.

A Life Rooted in China

SYSU has been both workplace and witness to their intertwined professional and family lives. The couple welcomed two sets of twin sons during their time in China—“Dalong & Xiaolong” and “Dahu & Xiaohu” —names that reflect their integration into Chinese culture.
