Recently, a five-member delegation of School of Biomedical Sciences of Chinese University of Hong Kong (SBS-CUHK), visited Third Affiliated Hospital of SYSU to further enhance strategic cooperation between the two institutions.

Under the guidance of Health China Initiative and the goal of building world-class universities and disciplines, the Third Affiliated Hospital intends to carry out strategic cooperation with SBS-CUHK, leveraging its location advantages of four campuses in the Greater Bay Area and its academic advantages of three key discipline clusters.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prof. Rong Limin, president of Third Affiliated hospital, briefly introduced the hospital’s achievements in the development of new medicine, especially its efforts in the integration of medicine and engineering. He emphasized that the two institutions shared many similarities in the layout of disciplines and therefore should seize the opportunities of development of Greater Bay Area, to further deepen collaborations.

Prof. Chan Man Lok, director of SBS-CUHK, briefly introduced the development outlook of School of Biomedical Sciences.

Professor Chan Wood Yee, associate director of SBS-CUHK, Professor Cheng Sze Lok, assistant dean of the Faculty of Medicine of CUHK, and Professor Yao Xiaoqiang from SBS-CUHK, introduced the school’s three research programs respectively, which are “Cancer Biology and Experimental Therapeutics”, “Developmental and Regenerative Biology”, and “Neural, Vascular and Metabolic Biology”. In their speech, they elaborated on the three programs’ research focus, human resource management and scientific research progress.

Prof. Yang Qintai, vice president of Third Affiliated Hospital, introduced the hospital's research platforms, discipline clusters, and current collaborations.

During the discussion session, participants from the two institutions exchanged their views on personnel development, scientific research, and academic exchanges.

Third Affiliated Hospital has advanteges in clinical and translational medicine of liver and brain disease, as well as immunological disorders. SBS-CUHK owns technical advantages in basic research. So both sides plan to promote cooperation by utilizing global innovation resources and geographical advantages of Greater Bay Area.

At the end of the meeting, Ms. Wu Jinghong, Party secretary of the hospital said that the extensive discussion had laid a solid foundation for future cooperation, and that Third Affiliated Hospital was willing to work closely with the SBS-CUHK by fully utilizing the advantages and resources of both sides for medical development in  Greater Bay Area.

In recent years, Third Affiliated Hospital responds positively to the country’s Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The hospital is committed to build high-level scientific and technological platforms and promote the regional collaborative innovation community, aiming to forge ahead the medical development in the Greater Bay Area.

In 2020, the hospital’s Brain Disease Center took the initiative to establish the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Mental and Neurological Diseases Alliance. And the hospital held the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Brain Science Summit Forum (BSSF) for three consecutive years. Moreover, in 2022, the hospital sent 45 medical staff members to Hong Kong for treatment of COVID-19 patients.

As for the connection with CUHK in recent years, one academic collaboration program between the hospital and CUHK had won the "Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Fund" from the Innovation and Technology Commission of Hong Kong. Besides, a number of outstanding graduates and alumni from CUHK was recruited to the hospital.

Based on the previous cooperation, Third Affiliated Hospital will step up efforts to enhance strategic cooperation with SBS-CUHK on more medical fields.
