Editor’s Note: The activity “Leaders Giving Lectures”——State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Open Course 100 Lectures and SOE Cadres Acting as Extracurricular Tutors, jointly organized by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council and the Ministry of Education, has entered Sun Yat-sen University. The activity selected 50 central enterprises and 50 universities in the first batch, inviting SOE leaders to give lectures to university students. Each SOE sends two leaders to give 2 lectures annually, and selects 2 cadres to act as extracurricular tutors for university students. The activity is aimed to help the students to have a comprehensive and correct understanding of the Party’s guidelines, principles and policies, increase their trust in SOEs, encourage them to take part in the reform and development of SOEs in the new era, and gather consensus on making state-owned capital stronger, better and bigger to nurture world-class enterprises with global competitiveness. Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG) are “paired”, and the first lecture has been held.

On May 23, 2019, the SYSU Lecture of “SOE Open Course 100 Lectures” and Extracurricular Tutors Appointment Ceremony was held in Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus of SYSU. Mr. Meng Zhenping, Board Chairman of China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG), presented a lecture entitled “China Southern Power Grid in Energy Change”. Professor Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, as well as leaders of functional departments from CSG and SYSU attended the event, which was presided over by Professor Yu Minbin, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Party Committee. Meanwhile, video-conference sites were set up on Guangzhou North Campus, Guangzhou East Campus and Zhuhai Campus, and the lecture was live broadcasted online. Nearly one thousand teachers and students watched the lecture on the sites and online.
From the four perspectives of driving forces, responsibilities, from the past to the future, and taking the lead, Meng Zhenping talked about the history and development trend of global energy change, China’s efforts and achievements in promoting global energy transformation, CSG’s past and present, as well as its innovative practice in the new era.

Meng Zhenping mentioned in his report that the world has entered the fourth industrial revolution, and the global energy development pattern will undergo major changes, showing the trend of broader energy supply, low-carbon energy structure, smart energy system, multi-polar energy pattern, and complex international competition. China’s energy development has also entered a new normal, displaying the features of slower growth in energy consumption, faster double substitution in energy structure, faster transformation in energy driving force, deeper change in energy supply and demand, and higher level in energy international cooperation.

Chinese energy enterprises take an active part in the energy change, and central enterprises play a leading role. 22 Chinese energy enterprises are listed among the global top 500 in 2018, and 13 of them are central enterprises. Through detailed statistics and cases Meng Zhenping explained energy central enterprises’ contributions in the transformation of energy supply side, transportation side, and consumption side.
In his report, Meng Zhenping also reviewed the history of CSG, and analyzed the opportunities and challenges in its development. He pointed out that CSG, as a state-owned key backbone enterprise related to national energy safety and national economic lifeline, should be in line with the historical progress and law of development in energy change, carry forward the spirit of responsibility in promoting energy transformation, push forward strategic transformation, take an active part in innovative practice, and make contribution to building a modern economic system, building a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient modern energy system, and building a socialist modern country.
Finally, Meng Zhenping introduced CSG’s innovative practice in implementing the new energy safety strategy of “four revolutions and one cooperation”, and answering the question of “what kind of CSG to build and how to build CSG”. He said that guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, CSG will implement new development ideas, strengthen strategic leading, advance high-quality development, accelerate the transformation into a smart grid operator, an energy industry value chain reorganizer and an energy ecosystem service provider, and strive to build a world-class enterprise with global competitiveness. He also encouraged SYSU students to take the advantage, participate in energy change, join the “energy national team”, and become the backbones in constructing a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system.

Secretary Chen Chunsheng said that Mr. Meng Zhenping’s lecture enabled the students to understand the pillar role of SOEs in socialist economy with Chinese characteristics, to have a deeper understanding of the conditions of the country, the Party, the society and the enterprise, and to have more trust and feelings in such “pillars of a country” as CGS. He expressed three hopes for the students: to know more about SOEs and their important role in building a strong socialist country; to hold dear the Party’s ideals and convictions, learn the spirit of “for the country, for the nation” from SOE staff, and assume the mission of the time; to keep the enthusiasm for study, the yearning for knowledge and the hope for future, strive for excellence, temper ourselves, grasp real skills, forge ahead, and realize our dreams.
Before the lecture, the organizer held an appointment ceremony of extracurricular tutors. Ms. Yang Zhixin, “National Outstanding CYL Cadre” and Secretary of CYL Committee of Guangdong Power Grid Co. Ltd., and Mr. Xiong Jun, “Model Worker of Guangzhou” and Deputy Director of Guangzhou Liwan Power Supply Bureau, were appointed as extracurricular tutors of SYSU. Secretary Chen Chunsheng presented them with certificates of appointment.
