On March 28, 2019, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) held the 2019 Work Conference on Laboratory Safety in Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. The conference was aimed to implement the series of important instructions on work safety given by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, review work experience, identify and analyze existing problems, further strengthen laboratory safety, and ensure the long-term and steady development of the university cause. Secretary Chen Chunsheng, President Luo Jun, Vice President Yang Qinghua, Assistant President Liu Jike, as well as directors and deputy directors of relevant departments and units, heads of relevant schools and departments, heads of member units of the university laboratory safety committee, presidents and vice presidents of affiliated hospitals, laboratory safety staff, a total of over 150 people attended the conference. The conference was presided over by Vice President Yang Qinghua.
Vice President Yang Qinghua pointed out in the laboratory safety report that the Party and the country have always attached great importance to work safety. Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core has made many important instructions on work safety. The university has attached importance to laboratory safety. In recent years, through system and mechanism construction on the one hand, and inspection and rectification on the other hand, we have continuously improved the prevention and control system on laboratory safety. However, some problems still exist and need to be addressed. In 2019, the focus of laboratory safety is to raise awareness of responsibility, awareness of red line, awareness of risk and awareness of innovation, and to ensure “four in places”, i.e., performance in place, regulation in place, rectification in place, and management and service in place.

The School of Chemistry and the School of Life Sciences introduced their work experiences in laboratory safety organization and responsibility system, regulation system, education and training, safety inspection and rectification, informatization construction, and conditions improvement.

President Luo Jun delivered the concluding speech. He put forward three requirements: first, improve political standing, and attach great importance to laboratory safety; second, strengthen awareness of responsibility, and perfect the three-level responsibility system of laboratory safety management; third, strengthen laboratory safety management, and turn regulations into culture gradually. He hoped that management units at all levels and staff members should realize “two transformations”, i.e., transform work style, and stress institutional control; transform way of thinking, and keep the problem-oriented and goal-oriented perspective. President Luo Jun stressed that 2019 is an important year for the university construction and development. Management staff at all levels and laboratory staff members should make concerted efforts to ensure laboratory safety, and ensure the long-term and steady development of the university cause.
