The 2018 Spring Work Conference of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) opened in K.K. Leung Hall on Guangzhou South Campus on March 31. Centering on the two themes of academic discipline development and “Double First-Class” construction, the conference was geared toward gathering consensus to speed up the pace of SYSU’s “Double First-Class” construction (building a world-class university and world-class disciplines), and strive toward realizing the goal of entering the national first-tier of universities. Members of the university leadership, heads of schools, functional departments and affiliated hospitals, teacher representatives including various leading academics and researchers and committee members, as well as student representatives attended the conference.


On the morning of March 31, President Luo Jun delivered a keynote report. He pointed out that the University’s 13th Congress of Party Representatives summarized the course of SYSU’s development in the past five years, made the important judgement that SYSU has entered a new era of development, established the goal of “accelerating its advancement into the first tier of universities nationwide and forging ahead to enter the forefront of world-class universities, all while remaining firmly rooted in China”, laid out three strategic goals, and made relevant work arrangements. He emphasized that SYSU has new positioning, new patterns and new ideas for its development in the new era. In the past three years, the University achieved a leap-forward development in its various causes, and educational levels have simultaneously reached new heights. In the next three years, the University will further accelerate its “Double First-Class” construction, seek to maintain the momentum of high-speed development, strive for the goal of entering the national first-tier of universities, and promote the realization of educational “transformation”. Finally, President Luo Jun analyzed the opportunities, challenges and difficulties in accelerating internal development and opening up new prospects. He expressed the hope that faculty, staff and students will work together to grasp new opportunities, face fresh challenges, overcome all difficulties, and promote the development of the University.


On the afternoon of March 31, Secretary Chen Chunsheng delivered a special report on implementing the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress and exercising full and rigorous Party self-governance. He emphasized that we must rally closely around the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, follow the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, implement the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress and the spirit of the second plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, exercise full and rigorous Party self-governance at the University, strive for “Double First-Class” construction, and ensure that the University scales new heights in its development.

Vice President Wang Xuehua, Assistant President Zhao Yong, Assistant President Tai Zhongzhi, and Vice President Li Mengfeng delivered special reports on the three-year work arrangements of talent development, comprehensive reform, scientific research, and talent cultivation respectively.

The spring work conference lasted for two days. Group discussions, presentations by the convenors of academic disciplines, and a closing speech from Secretary Chen Chunsheng comprised the second day’s agenda.
