On August 17, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) announced the evaluation results of 2017 programs. The number of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) projects funded by NSFC is ranked 2nd and the total funding is ranked 3rd among universities nationwide, hitting a new record high.

So far, 829 SYSU projects have received funding from NSFC this year, a 29.94% increase over the same period in 2016; and the total funding reaches 410 million yuan, a 33.51% increase over the same period in 2016.

In 2017, the number of SYSU projects funded by NSFC under the categories of both General Program and Young Scientists Fund is ranked 2nd among universities in China: 419 projects in General Program (a 33.87% increase over 2016) with funding of 241 million yuan (a 30.16% increase over 2016); and 370 projects in Young Scientists Fund (a 33.09% increase over 2016) with funding of 82 million yuan (a 59.39% increase over 2016).

In 2017, SYSU has 2 projects funded by NSFC under the category of Science Fund for Creative Research Groups, with Professor Liu Yizhi from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center and Professor Li Zhongfei from Sun Yat-sen Business School as the group leader respectively; 16 projects in Key Program, a 60% increase over 2016; and 7 projects in Excellent Young Scientists Fund.
