On the morning of January 9, 2017, the opening ceremony of the 9th Faculty and Staff Representative Congress and the 20th Faculty and Staff Union Representative Assembly of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was held in K.K. Leung Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. More than 380 official representatives from 51 delegations, observer-representatives, and specially invited representatives attended the meeting. The faculty and staff unions of 14 universities including Tsinghua University and Peking University sent congratulatory telegrams to the meeting.
Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, delivered the opening speech. He affirmed the work of the 8th Faculty and Staff Representative Congress & 19th Faculty and Staff Union Representative Assembly in the past five years. He hoped that the representatives would discuss and review the work of the University, present the key issues of concern by faculty and students, and make beneficial suggestions.

Mr. Song Jie, Associate Counsel of Guangdong Federation of Trade Unions, extended warm congratulations to the meeting. He affirmed the achievements of SYSU Faculty and Staff Union and its leading and exemplary role for trade unions in Guangdong province. He hoped that SYSU Faculty and Staff Union would make new progress and write a new chapter in the work of faculty and staff union as well as faculty and staff representative congress.

Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, delivered the University Work Report. He reported on the University’s work in 2016 in terms of development planning and operational resources, talent cultivation, faculty development, disciplinary construction, scientific research and social service, campus construction and public service, cultural construction and development environment construction, internal structural reform, Party building and ideological and political construction. President Luo Jun pointed out that the University has entered a new phase of development. In the past year, the University took the opportunity of the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan to promote comprehensive reform and consolidated the basis for building a world-class university through the “doubling plan”, i.e., a doubling in the number of faculty and teaching talents, the total floor space of University facilities, and overall operating funds. He hoped that all faculty and staff would make concerted efforts to realize our goal of entering the first-tier among universities nationwide and becoming a world-class university.

At the meeting, the representatives also listened to the University Financial Work Report delivered by Vice President Li Shanmin, the Talent Cultivation Work Report by Vice President Li Mengfeng, the Human Resources Comprehensive Reform Work Report by Assistant President Luo Teng, the Campus Comprehensive Treatment Work Report by Assistant President Cheng Huanwen, and the Work Report of SYSU 8th Faculty and Staff Representative Congress & 19th Faculty and Staff Union by Deputy Secretary Li Ping.

During the meeting, the delegations will have group discussions on the University Work Report. They will make proposals and suggestions on teaching, research, medical service, management, logistic service, etc. Some delegations will report their discussions to the representatives at the closing ceremony to be held on January 12, 2017.
