On November 3, 2015, the signing ceremony of the strategic cooperation agreement between Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government to jointly build world-class university was held in Zhudao Guest House in Guangzhou. A new campus of SYSU will be built in Shenzhen in accordance with the standard of world-class university.

The attendees of the signing ceremony included Mr. Hu Chunhua, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, Mr. Zhu Xiaodan, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and Governor of Guangdong Province, Mr. Du Yubo, Vice Minister of Education and Deputy Secretary of CPC Leading Group of Ministry of Education, Mr. Ma Xingrui, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and Secretary of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, Mr. Lin Musheng, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and Secretary-General of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, Mr. Chen Yunxian, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province, Mr. Xu Qin, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and Mayor of Shenzhen, Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, and Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU.

Mr. Chen Yunxian, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province, and Mr. Du Yubo, Vice Minister of Education, delivered a speech at the signing ceremony.

Mr. Chen Yunxian said that the signing of the agreement is an important event for Guangdong province in accelerating the construction of high-level universities and implementing the innovation driven development strategy. He hoped that Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and Sun Yat-sen University will build the SYSU Shenzhen Campus into an important base for cultivating high-level innovation talents and supporting Guangdong’s economic and social development.

Mr. Du Yubo pointed out that the signing of the agreement to jointly build the SYSU Shenzhen Campus is a strategic measure in exploring the school running model of world-class university with Chinese characteristics. It is of profound significance for deepening the comprehensive reform in higher education, innovating the school running system of higher education, accelerating the implementation of the innovation driven development strategy, and promoting the reform and development of both Shenzhen and SYSU.

Mr. Xu Qin, Mayor of Shenzhen, and Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, signed the agreement on behalf of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and Sun Yat-sen University respectively.

SYSU Shenzhen Campus will be located in Guangming New District, Shenzhen with an area of about 5,000 mu. As one of the main campuses of SYSU, it is expected to be put into use in September 2018. The Campus will have a relatively complete discipline system of the liberal arts, science, medical sciences and engineering, and a complete talent cultivation system from bachelor’s to doctoral degrees. In order to serve the national innovation driven development strategy and Shenzhen’s economic and social development need, the Campus will focus on medical sciences and emerging interdisciplinary engineering. Meanwhile, in order to support the development of medical education and raise the level of healthcare in Shenzhen, SYSU and Shenzhen government will cooperate to build three affiliated hospitals of SYSU in Shenzhen.
