At half past seven last Friday morning, an over-70-year-old lady dropped into the Pearl River near The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University. At this time of emergency, a passer-by jumped into the river and saved her.

Who is this brave man? The witness’ video recorded a profile of his face. He is Doctor Jiang Jiaxin from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital. The 58-year-old doctor was on his way to work, after saving the old lady he went to work at the hospital as usual. His colleagues did not know this modest man was the hero until the reporters came to the door.

Yesterday, after treating the last patient, Doctor Jiang told the reporters who had been waiting outside that he was not a hero, and he "only gave a helping hand to a citizen who was in need of help”.

He said that what touched him most in the whole process was that many passers-by called for help and gave their helping hands, without whom, even though he saved the old lady, his life might have been in danger because of exhaustion.
