On March 18th, Professor Greg Skilbeck, Associate Dean (Research) of Faculty of Science, University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) and Leo Mian Liu, Director of International Engagement, UTS came to SYSU for a 2-day visit. Members of the delegation also included Mr. Henry Tsang, UTS Researcher, Advisor of Center for Australian Studies, Honorary Professor and Adjunct Researcher of Center for Oceanian Studies, SYSU, and Mr. Zheng Wu, Foreign Affairs Secretary to the Chairman and Assistant Director of the Office of Kingold Group Companies Limited.
SYSU Assistant President Zhu Xiping met with the guests, accompanied by Chang Chenguang, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Hao Yajuan, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, and Associate Professor Wang Xuedong from the School of Asia-Pacific Studies. Both sides held discussions on collaborations in student exchange, teacher exchange, joint cultivation of postgraduates, joint construction of research institutes, during which they expressed their willingness to collaborate substantively in these fields.

Professor Greg Skilbeck also had a talk with leaders and teachers from School of Software, School of Foreign Languages, School of Asia-Pacific Studies, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Engineering and The Third Affiliated Hospital during his visit and exchanged opinions over issues such as scientific research collaboration, joint cultivation and student exchange. It is reported that Dr Chau Chak Wing, Chairman of Kingold Group Companies Limited, will donate 5 million Australian dollars to set up the Australia-China Student Scholarship, which is expected to give impetus to further collaborations between the two universities.

UTS originated from Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts, which was founded in 1843, and was officially renamed the University of Technology, Sydney in1987. It is a key comprehensive university with strength in business, law, education, science and technology, ranked 13th among research universities in Australia and 284th in the QS World University Rankings 2012. In 1998, SYSU and UTS signed a memorandum for cooperation in student and teacher exchange, information sharing and research collaboration.
