From February 21 to 22, the SYSU Spring Work Conference was held on South Campus. The theme of the one and a half day conference is to arrange, discuss and implement the work of the University in 2013. Secretary Zheng Detao and President Xu Ningsheng made arrangements for the key work of the University in 2013 respectively; all university leaders, assistant presidents, secretaries of second-level Party Committees, persons in charge of functional departments, schools and departments directly under the university, units directly under the university, affiliated units, logistics group and industry group attended the conference.

In the conference, Secretary Zheng Detao delivered a keynote speech entitled “On the New Starting Point, Solidly Promote the Scientific Development of the University”. He pointed out that the 12th Congress of Party Representatives of SYSU had clarified the development goal and major tasks of the University, and we should implement and promote the “Twelfth Five-Year” development plan of the University vigorously and comprehensively. On the new starting point, we should carefully analyze current opportunities and challenges, face up to the gap, actively forge ahead, and sturdily promote scientific development of the University. He emphasized that we should further raise the sense of responsibility and urgency, put more efforts into the key work, and constantly improve the cadres’ capability of promoting scientific development.

President Xu Ningsheng delivered a keynote speech on the overall plan and administrative work arrangement of the University for this year. He pointed out that, we need to further unify the understanding, stimulate the initiative, seize new major development opportunities, sturdily promote and implement the “Twelfth Five-Year” development plan of the University, and speed up the pace of scientific development of all disciplines. He stressed that this year we should keep on expanding the work of “dedication to teaching” and “dedication to students”, strengthen system construction and fix some work content in the form of system. At the same time, we should make more efforts in “dedication to learning”, and regard the pursuit of academic contribution and academic excellence as the main purpose of discipline construction, research tasks and social services.

Attendants were divided into three groups, namely, the humanities group, science and engineering group, and medical sciences group, and held heated discussions on issues in teaching and research, discipline construction, talent cultivation, international cooperation, Party and administration, medical services, talent introduction and social services. Representative of each group made a report of the discussion to the conference.
