2010 Sun Yat-sen University graduate thematic event “Loving Alma Mater” and the appointment ceremony for the student council member were held in Huaishi Hall on the morning of 15 April. The event was co-organized by the Sun Yat-sen University Alumni Association, Student Affairs Office, the Graduates Office of Graduate School, the SYSU Youth Association, and Career Development Counseling Center, which was aimed at cultivating alumni culture, fostering an extricable relationship between the alma mater and the alumni. About 200 people attended the ceremony, including Li Ping, deputy Party secretary of SYSU, representatives of the organizers and different Departments and Schools, and student council members of the first year students. The ceremony was hosted by secretary-in-general of Sun Yat-sen University Alumni Association.

During the ceremony, Qi Xiaoping, head of the Student Affairs Office introduced the arrangements of the “Loving Alma Mater” graduate thematic activity. Wang Erxin, vice director of Career Development Counseling Center read out the list of student council members of the first year students. Representative leaders of different organizing administrative units, academic units conferred appointing certificates to 169 council member representatives from 31 Departments and Schools. 3 graduate representatives from the faculties of humanities and social sciences, science and medicine respectively spoke at the ceremony, expressing their feelings of farewell to the alma mater, noting that as alumni of SYSU, they would bear in mind the philosophy and ideal of the University, and realize the value of their lives at the new pace of their live.

Finally, Li Ping reiterated the University’s philosophy—treat students well and love alumni, and shared with the student council members of her experiences as a graduate of SYSU years ago. On behalf of the University, she extended the gratitude to the student council members who had taken on the responsibility of maintaining the connection between the alma mater and the alumni, and acclaimed their work as “the ‘first unpaid job’ after their graduation”. She wished that, through the joint effort of the student council members, University academic staff and students, the relationship between the alumni and alma mater would endure.

After the appointment ceremony, the first session of the first-year-student council meeting was held. The Alumni Association introduced the council work to the new council members, and discussed with them on relevant issues. According to sources, the "Loving Alma Mater” Graduate Thematic Activity has been held successfully for three sessions. Its scale expands every year, and the intake of new members is increasing. The council has taken in 369 members, the largest number ever. With activities held like e-school yearbook competition, graduation tree planting, promotion of alumni class ring, the alumni credit cards, graduation travel and circle grab paste are introduced to enrich the graduation thematic activities.
