The 3rd SYSU Clinical Research Salon was held on North Campus on February 4, 2015, attracting more than 100 faculty members from SYSU and its affiliated hospitals. Prof. Lin Tongyu from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) and Ms. Zhou Xuyu, Director of SYSU Medical Library, were invited to give a talk respectively. The salon was chaired by Prof. Cheng Chao and Associated Professor Guo Yan, previous visiting fellows of the SYSU-JHU Collaboration Program.
Prof. Lin Tongyu sharing his reflections on clinical research
The first talk given by Prof. Lin Tongyu was entitled “Clinical and Transitional Research Reflections upon the Treatment of Preventing Hepatitis B Virus Reactivation among Patients with Untreated Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Receiving R-CHOP Chemotherapy”. Prof. Lin is the deputy director and chief expert of lymphoma at SYSUCC. As one of the leading experts in this field, he has rich experience in medical oncology such as chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and biological therapy. In December 2014, Prof. Lin’s research team published its latest research outcome in the world renowned medical periodical “JAMA” (IF 30.4). The research has a significant impact to the treatment of patients of diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with hepatitis B infection. During his talk, Prof. Lin gave in-depth explanation of the relations between the treatment of lymphoma patients with hepatitis B and its prognosis. He shared the story behind publishing a paper in such a world-class medical periodical. As the salon was coincidently held on the World Cancer Day, Prof. Lin also demonstrated vivid examples of cancer stories and called on everyone to pay attention to their health.

In the second part of the salon, Ms. Zhou Xuyu gave a general overview of the clinical research resources provided by SYSU Medical Library. Ms. Zhou is a member of the Chinese Society of Medical Information and a member of the editorial board of
The Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine. She received training in information resource management in Yale University, and studied courses in research ethics in Johns Hopkins University. For many years she has taught courses to graduate students such as medical information retrieval and utilization, evidence based medicine and DME. During her talk, Ms. Zhou introduced some major databases purchased by SYSU, and especially explained the usage of Scopus. She not only compared the pros and cons of different databases, but also gave many useful tips on improving the efficiency in resource searching based on her working experience. In addition, she recommended some helpful e-resources for reference books or medical textbooks, such as the website of McGraw-Hill and Micromedex.
Discussion
SYSU Clinical Research Salon is an academic activity initiated by the visiting fellows of the SYSU-JHU Collaboration Program. They hope that the salon can serve as a bridge to connect all the faculty members who are interested in clinical research. Different from traditional lectures, the salon encourages participants to discuss their thoughts and reflections based on the speakers’ topics. It is hoped that the meeting between people, energy and ideas can inspire researchers’ own clinical research work.
