On the afternoon of October 25, a forum on “What Can We Do About Ebola?” was held in Boxue Hall of the Science and Technology Complex Building on North Campus of SYSU. Prof. Li Mengfeng, Vice President of SYSU, Prof. Zhang Fuchun, Vice President of Guangzhou Eighth People’s Hospital, Prof. Zhang Hui, Deputy Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine of SYSU, Professor Huang Xi from Zhongshan School of Medicine of SYSU, and Professor Lu Gui from School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of SYSU, participated in the forum as distinguished guests. Over 300 faculty members and students attended the event.
Experts discussing the prevention and control of Ebola
The forum was presented in the form of an academic salon. First, Professor Zhang Fuchun, deputy head of the Guangzhou expert panel for the treatment of dengue fever, gave a report on the progress in the research into the diagnosis and treatment of dengue fever. He elaborated on the diagnostic criteria, classification, and clinical treatment modalities of critical dengue fever.
Dr Zhu Xun from the Key Laboratory of Tropical Diseases Control, Ministry of Education of China, Dr Pan Ting from the Institute of Human Virology of Sun Yat-sen University, Dr Li Chufang from the State Key Laboratory for Respiratory Diseases, and Dr Pu Jieying from the Department of Immunology at Zhongshan School of Medicine, spoke on the etiology, current drug research, antibody therapy, and immunology against the Ebola virus respectively.
The five distinguished guests at the forum had a heated discussion about the speeches. They discussed the mechanism of cytokines in the infection, the vertical mode of transmission, the enhanced activity of RES, and the cause of death of the Ebola virus, as well as the immunosuppressant therapy for it.
As Prof. Zhang Hui pointed out in his summary speech, at present, it is our great responsibility to prevent and control the infection of Ebola virus, and it can be done. With a sound national system of disease control and prevention, and the concerted effort of the people, we can successfully and effectively overcome this epidemic of Ebola hemorrhagic fever by breaking its route of transmission and other means.
