Professor Max Lu, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, Mr. Patrick Degg, Vice President of the University of Surrey, Professor Yu Xiong, Associate Vice-President of the University of Surrey, and Professor Tao Chen, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) on November 10, 2023. SYSU President Gao Song and Executive Vice President Xiao Haipeng met with the guests at the VIP Room of Zhongshan Building on the Guangzhou South Campus. Representatives of SYSU's School of Advanced Energy, School of Electronics and Information Technology, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Civil Engineering, School of Intelligent Systems Engineering, School of Physics, and Office of International Cooperation and Exchange attended the meeting.

President Gao Song extended a warm welcome to Vice-Chancellor Lu and his delegation, and introduced the current status of SYSU's development in recent years, focusing on the cultivation of talents, reform of the faculty system, and the international cooperation and exchanges. He said that partnership between the two universities has been particularly successful in the field of tourism management, and colleagues from the two universities have also been collaborating in civil engineering, computer science, electronic science and engineering, materials science, pharmaceutical science, and chemical engineering. He hoped that Sun Yat-sen University and the University of Surrey will further develop these collaborations and explore more collaboration opportunities between the two universities.
Vice-Chancellor Max Lu expressed his gratitude for the hospitality of SYSU and introduced the disciplinary strengths of the University of Surrey in the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence, space technology, water resource treatment, food science, communication engineering, tourism, sociology, management, etc. Vice Chancellor Max Lu said that he hoped the two universities will build stronger links in the above fields and together develop more joint research projects and student training programs.

The University of Surrey was founded in 1891 as Battersea Polytechnic Institute in London, and was granted a Royal Charter in 1966 to become a comprehensive university. It has been ranked No. 244 worldwide in the QS World University Rankings 2024.
