On May 21, 2017, the opening ceremony of the first Meteorological Science and Technology Week was held in Guangdong Science Center. With the theme of “building a strong nation with science and advancing meteorology with innovation”, a series of activities are organized in Guangzhou during the week, including meteorological sci-tech achievements exhibition, science forums, meteorological science contest, etc.
Ms. Liu Yaming, Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA); Mr. Deng Haiguang, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province; Prof. Luo Jun, President of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU); Mr. Feng Chujian, Deputy Director General of Department of Policies, Regulation and Supervision, Ministry of Science and Technology; and Mr. Bai Xi, Director of Department of Science Popularization, China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), attended the opening ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by Dr. Yu Rucong, Deputy Administrator of CMA.

Before the opening ceremony, President Luo Jun held a discussion with Administrator Liu Yaming and Vice Governor Deng Haiguang on promoting the development of atmospheric science.
President Luo Jun thanked the CMA and Guangdong provincial government for their support to SYSU’s atmospheric science. He said that in the new stage of the University’s development, we are actively developing toward the deep space, deep earth and deep-blue cyber sector, and trying to meet the national major strategic needs. The atmospheric science plays a leading role in developing the marine disciplinary cluster at the University. SYSU will support and promote the joint sharing and joint building with CMA and Guangdong province, and make more contribution to the talent cultivation and social development.
The attendees of the opening ceremony also included Dr. Xu Yanhao, Deputy Secretary of the leading Party members' group, Vice President and Executive Secretary of CAST; Mr. Gu Xingwei, Deputy Secretary-General of People’s Government of Guangdong Province; Mr. Yu Yubin, Deputy Director of Department of Science & Technology and Climate Change at CMA; Mr. Lu Jingui, Director of Guangdong Science Center; Prof. Wang Xuehua, Vice President of SYSU; Prof. Dong Wenjie, Dean of School of Atmospheric Sciences at SYSU, and Mr. Yang Jianlin, Party Secretary of School of Atmospheric Sciences at SYSU.
