On the afternoon of January 12, 2016, a three member delegation led by Ms. Rebecca Needham, Consul General of New Zealand Consulate-General in Guangzhou, visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, met with the guests in Zhongshan Building on South Campus. Prof. Bao Jigang, Dean of School of Tourism Management, Prof. Zhang Hui, Deputy Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine, and Ms. Huang Ruimin, Deputy Director, Office of International Cooperation & Exchange also attended the meeting.

Prof. Luo Jun extended a warm welcome to Ms. Rebecca Needham and introduced SYSU’s general situation, especially its strategic goals, campus development and health care system. Prof. Luo Jun expressed his hope to enhance SYSU’s cooperation with New Zealand in the fields of science and technology, culture and health in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative. Meanwhile, he also hoped to expand student exchanges and attract more New Zealand students to study at SYSU.
Ms. Rebecca Needham said that she was glad to visit SYSU. She pointed out that SYSU is one of the most prestigious universities in China, the New Zealand Consulate-General in Guangzhou attaches great importance to its relations with SYSU and will continue to promote and support the cooperation between New Zealand and SYSU, especially the cooperation and exchange in tourism and medical service.
In recent years, SYSU has strengthened cooperation and exchange with universities in New Zealand. In 2013, SYSU signed agreements with the University of Auckland and the University of Waikato respectively to conduct cooperation in student exchanges, joint programs and faculty visits. In addition, SYSU’s School of Tourism Management, Lingnan (University) College and International School of Business & Finance have established cooperative relations with universities in New Zealand such as the University of Waikato.
