On January 20, Mr. Wang Zhigang, Secretary of the CPC Leading Group and Vice Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), chaired a meeting on the implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy on East Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Mr. Chen Yunxian, Vice Governor of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province; Prof. Zheng Detao, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee; and representatives of relevant provincial departments, universities, research institutes and innovative enterprises attended the meeting.

Mr. Chen Yunxian thanked MOST for its long term support for Guangdong’s science and technology development. He said that the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and the People’s Government of Guangdong Province attach great importance to the implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy, and innovation-driven development has become a central task in promoting the economic restructuring and industrial transformation and upgrading in Guangdong. He hoped that the cooperation between MOST and Guangdong will be enhanced to promote the construction of big science and engineering system as well as the integration of science, technology and finance.
Prof. Zheng Detao introduced SYSU’s plan and practice in implementing the innovation-driven development strategy. Sticking to the guideline of “national needs and international level”, SYSU has taken measures to improve its innovation ability through reforms in management structure and mechanism, and built market-oriented platforms for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. He also made suggestions on implementing the innovation-driven development strategy.
Mr.Wang Zhigan emphasized that we should promote all-round innovation with science and technology innovation as its core. Universities, research institutes and enterprises should enhance internal development as well as domestic and international cooperation; government departments should improve innovation evaluation system, and try to create a market environment and social environment that will protect and stimulate innovation.
After the meeting, the group visited the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou and the State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies on East Campus of SYSU.
