On December 3-4, 2014, a six-member delegation led by Dr. Sergio Balarenzo, Rector of University of Piura, visited SYSU. Members of the delegation included Jesus Wu Luy, Former Ambassador of Peru in China, and Mr. David Gamarra, Consul General of the Consulate General of Peru in Guangzhou. Prof. Zhu Xiping, Vice President of SYSU, met with the guests on the morning of December 3.

Prof. Zhu Xiping extended a warm welcome to Dr. Sergio Balarenzo on his first visit to SYSU, and introduced the general situation of SYSU. He said that SYSU has established good cooperative relations with universities in South America, and hoped this visit would enhance the friendship between SYSU and University of Piura, and promote future cooperation and exchange.
Dr. Sergio Balarenzo thanked SYSU for the warm reception. Peru is one of the earliest South American countries that established diplomatic relationship with China. Chinese immigrants, especially immigrants from Guangdong, are an important part of the Peruvian society. The University of Piura attaches importance to exchange and cooperation with Chinese universities, and he hoped that the two universities would deepen understanding and cooperation.
Prof. Wang Bin, Academic and Administrative Supervisor of School of International Studies, Ms. Zhang Zhongli, Chair of Department of Spanish in School of International Studies, Prof. Yuan Ding from Department of History, and Ms. Wu Xiaoyan, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, were present at the meeting.
During the visit, the delegation held discussions with representatives from School of International Studies, School of Chinese as a Second Language, and School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
On the afternoon of December 3, the delegates went to Zhuhai Campus and gave lectures on “University of Piura and Study in Peru” as well as “Peruvian Culture in China” to students from Department of Spanish, School of International Studies.
Founded in 1969, the University of Piura has two campuses, one in Piura and one in Lima, the capital of Peru. In 2009, University of Piura and the Capital Normal University in Beijing jointly set up the Confucius Institute at University of Piura.
