Recently, President Xu Ningsheng and leaders of relevant departments of SYSU went to Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center to visit the faculty and staff and conduct survey on scientific research, disciplinary construction and talent cultivation. The leadership of the Center, principal investigators of the introduced talent project groups at the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, and directors of clinical specialties attended the meeting.

Liu Yizhi, Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, reported on the disciplinary construction, talent introduction and strategic goals of development. The principal investigators of the introduced talent project groups at the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology and directors of clinical specialties present at the meeting said that SYSU supported scientific research and respected talents, coming to work at SYSU was the right choice, and they would return the support of the University and the Center with real achievements. They pointed out the need to further explore how two closely combine basic research and clinical research to solve clinical problems. They hoped to increase exchanges and interactions among researchers, promote industrialization of research achievements and apply research results in clinical treatment. The attendants also discussed how to combine industry-university-research, ophthalmic research, scientific frontier research, basic research and clinical research, as well as transformation of research results, talent introduction and disciplinary development and planning.
President Xu Ningsheng listened carefully to the work report and discussed with the attendants. He affirmed the achievements of the Center in recent years in scientific research, international exchange and cooperation, disciplinary construction, etc. The Center has developed with international visions, broad minds, rigorous academic requirements, and the integration of medicine, teaching, research and prevention, completed a qualitative upgrade in talent, research and international cooperation, and maintained its leading position in the country. Meanwhile, he put forward concrete requirements for the Center in future development, talent introduction, platform construction, industry-university-research, and international exchange. He emphasized that the Center should grasp the opportunity of building the national “2011 Collaborative Innovation Center” and implementing the University’s disciplinary construction plan, make use of the resources both inside and outside the University, keep the advantages of the Center, give full play to the role of international talent teams, pay more attention to the transformation of research results and the construction of international teams, and strive for "international first-class".
After the meeting, the group led by President Xu Ningsheng visited the laboratories of introduced talent project groups and the Zhujiang New Town Division of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center.
