On January 21, 2014, Sun Yat-sen University- Johns Hopkins University (SYSU-JHU) Collaboration Program Informationization Assessment Report Meeting was held on North Campus. This meeting was a feedback of assessment on the information systems of four affiliated hospitals of SYSU from The Dorenfest Group, a cooperative partner of Johns Hopkins University.
Prof. Li Mengfeng, Vice President of SYSU; Cai Weibin, Deputy Director of Development Planning and Discipline Construction Office; Zhang Qi, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange; Zhu Changping, Deputy Director of Office of Medical Science; Wang Zongfang, Deputy Director of Bureau of Affiliated Hospitals Administration; He Haitao, Deputy Director of Network and Information Technology Center; and CIOs of SYSU affiliated hospitals attended the meeting. Prof. He Mingguang, Leader of SYSU-JHU Program Workgroup and Deputy Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, presided over the meeting. Mr. Sheldon. I. Dorenfest, President of The Dorenfest Group, delivered a keynote speech.
SYSU-JHU Collaboration Program Informationization Assessment Report Meeting
Prof. Li Mengfeng recalled the accomplishments in teaching training, cooperative research and infrastructure assessment undertaken by SYSU-JHU Collaboration Program. He pointed out that according to the assessment report from JHU, there were a lot yet to be done to improve the information systems’ ability to support clinical researches at SYSU affiliated hospitals. He hoped that the feedback could accelerate the construction of hospital information systems, bringing new thoughts and explorations on medical informatics at SYSU.
Mr. Sheldon. I. Dorenfest gave a presentation entitled "Review and Assessment of Data Available to Support Medical Treatment and Clinical Research". From the perspective of an expert on medical information technology, Mr. Dorenfest reviewed the development and evolution of healthcare information technology in USA and China. Considering the current situation in China, he elaborated and analyzed approaches by which Chinese hospitals could accumulate historical data to support clinical diagnosis and research. At the second part of the report, Mr. Dorenfest summarized the current status of informatics in affiliated hospitals of SYSU from the points of e data availability, software application, current status of systems and data integration, automated data storage, future plan of data integration and etc.
The attendees held a heated and lively discussion on how to establish data integration platform for medical research at the university or hospital level.
