On October 24-25, Dr. Carl Amrhein, Provost and Vice President (Academic) of University of Alberta, led a delegation to visit SYSU. Professor Zhu Xiping, Vice President of SYSU, met with the guests in the VIP Lounge of Zhongshan Building. Ms. Long Bo, Deputy Dean of Graduate School, Ms. Xu Yao, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, and Professor Zhang Yan, Assistant Dean of School of Life Sciences, attended the meeting.
Vice President Zhu Xiping meeting with Provost and Vice President Carl Amrhein
Vice President Zhu Xiping extended his warm welcome to the delegates and introduced the campuses, disciplines and international cooperation and exchange in SYSU. Provost and Vice President Carl Amrhein introduced the basic situation of University of Alberta. The two sides discussed student exchange and joint education program, and agreed to expand collaborations in medical sciences.
During the visit, witnessed by Governor General of Canada David Johnston, the two universities signed the Memorandum of Understanding, the agreement of joint PhD program and the agreement of student exchange, and planned to implement relevant projects next year. The opening ceremony and tree planting ceremony for the SYSU-Alberta Joint Laboratory for Biodiversity Conservation were held, indicating that the cooperation between the two universities has entered a substantive stage.
The delegates held discussions with persons in charge of School of Education, School of Sociology and Anthropology, and East Campus. They also visited the Library on East Campus and Guangzhou Supercomputing Center.
Founded in 1908, the University of Alberta is one of the five comprehensive research universities in Canada. The School of Life Sciences of Sun Yat-sen University has carried out extensive academic exchanges and collaborations with the Faculty of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences of University of Alberta. In May 2011, the two universities signed a MOU at the university level and agreed to focus on collaborative research and talent cultivation in the field of life sciences.
