The Sun Yat-sen University and Carnegie Mellon University Joint Institute of Engineering (JIE) announced yesterday that they will enroll 80 postgraduates for master programs and 5 for PhD programs. The programs will start in fall 2014.

Upon graduation, students will receive two degrees — one from Sun Yat-sen and one from Carnegie Mellon — at the master and doctoral levels, and have a chance to get a job in U.S..

The Chinese domestic candidates are required to pass the national graduate examination, and obtain qualifying TOEFL and GRE scores.

Students will study at campuses in both Guangdong and U.S.. The annual tuition of a postgraduate student is about 190,000 yuan. Excellent postgraduate students may have a scholarship, with a top amount of 100,000 yuan per person.

JIE is an international collaboration between Sun Yat-sen University and Carnegie Mellon University to innovate engineering education, expecting to help local research communities and industries to carry out cutting-edge research and product development, and lead local industry improvement.

Initially, the institute will only offer degrees in electrical and computer engineering. Gradually, other engineering and technology disciplines will be included.
