On the morning of June 17, a 4-member delegation led by Professor Alister Jones, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waikato, and Dr. Ed Weymes, Vice President International of the University of Waikato and Associate Dean International of Waikato Management School, visited SYSU. Professor Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of SYSU, met with the delegation in the VIP Lounge of Zhongshan Building. Professor Wen Wushao, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, was also present at the meeting.

Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng extended a warm welcome to the delegation, and introduced the overall situation of SYSU’s international cooperation and exchange. He pointed out that the friendly cooperative relationship between China and New Zealand, the extensive cultural, educational, economic and trade exchange between south China and New Zealand, and the existing collaborations between the two universities were favorable conditions for further deepening of bilateral cooperation. He hoped that on the basis of previous school-level collaborations, the two universities would explore cooperation in new areas, such as Computer and Information Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences and other predominant disciplines.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Alister Jones introduced the overall situation and predominant disciplines of the University of Waikato, and hoped that both sides would promote cooperation and exchange, deepen mutual understanding and trust, and push bilateral cooperation to a higher level.
During the meeting, the two sides also discussed about student exchange, joint training programs and joint construction of Confucius Institute.
In April this year, witnessed by Steven Joyce, Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, New Zealand, Sun Yat-sen University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Waikato in Guangzhou. The school-level exchanges include the collaboration between Lingnan College and School of Tourism Management of SYSU and Waikato Management School of the University of Waikato, and the joint undergraduate program between International Business School of SYSU and the University of Waikato.
The University of Waikato was founded in 1964. It is one of the eight public universities sponsored by the New Zealand government. Its predominant disciplines include Education, Law, Management, Computer and Information Sciences, etc.
