On the afternoon of March 12th, Ms Frances Adamson, Australian Ambassador to China, Ms Jill Collins, Consul-General of Australian Consulate General in Guangzhou, and their entourage visited SYSU. Ms Adamson delivered a speech entitled “Australia and China: Looking Out from the Mountaintop” in the lecture hall of School of Foreign Languages.

Before the speech, Vice President Yan Guangmei had a meeting with the guests in the VIP Hall of Zhongshan Building. Ling Wenhua, Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange; Chang Chenguang, Dean of School of Foreign Languages and Director of Center for Australian Studies; Yu Changsen, Associate Professor of School of Asia-Pacific Studies and Executive Vice Director of Center for Oceanian Studies, were also present at the meeting.
Vice President Yan Guangmei warmly welcomed Ms Adamson. He briefly introduced the history and present situation of SYSU and the exchanges between SYSU and Australian universities. Ms Adamson thanked Vice President Yan Guangmei for the introduction and said that she looked forward to and cherished this opportunity of communicating with SYSU teachers and students. She highly affirmed the role of Center for Australian Studies and Center for Oceanian Studies in promoting communication between China and Australia. She also hoped that universities in the two countries could have more opportunities of exchange and cooperation.

In her speech, Ms Adamson reviewed the developing process of China-Australia relations in economy, politics, education, culture and national defense. Looking into the future, she also hoped that with the power of young leaders in the future, including the students present, China-Australia bilateral relations could make greater achievements by the 80th anniversary of China-Australia diplomatic relations and the 60th anniversary of Australian Consulate General in Guangzhou. Ms Adamson said that Guangdong Province has played an indispensible role in underpinning and developing China-Australia relations, and she believed that Guangdong would continue to play a greater part in promoting China-Australia bilateral relations.
