On May 10-11, the 6th SYSU Model United Nations, sponsored by School of Asia-Pacific Studies and SYSU Youth Association, and undertaken by the student union of School of Asia-Pacific Studies and International Relations Association, was held on South Campus. 110 students from 7 universities including Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, South China Normal University, South China Agricultural University, Southern Medical University and Guangdong University of Finance & Economics participated in this event. Takeshi Hamashita, Dean of School of Asia-Pacific Studies; Liu Zeyang, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Youth Association; Ren Hong, Deputy Dean of School of Asia-Pacific Studies; Professor Xu Guoqi from the History Department of The University of Hong Kong; and Associate Professor Wang Xuedong from School of Asia-Pacific Studies of SYSU attended the meeting.
This year’s Model United Nations (MUN) set up three committees, namely, United Nations Human Rights Council, Food and Agriculture Organization, and Paris Peace Conference, 1919. Delegates representing different countries discussed about global LGBT rights, influence of intellectual property on food and agriculture in developing countries, and peace treaties after World War I. Meanwhile, Main Press Centre (MPC), which reported and commented on the agenda of this year’s MUN, was also established. Through this virtual arena of diplomacy, students displayed diplomatic manner and outstanding capacity in the process of negotiation and consultation, striving for the interests of their represented countries and the world at large. At the end of the event, winners of the four awards — Best Delegate, Best Delegation, Best Role Play and Best Cooperative Spirit — were announced.
MUN has been held six times at SYSU, attracting a total of over 800 students from universities in Guangdong province. MUN is one of SYSU’s second classrooms for cultivating students, and will become a practical platform for broadening the students’ international vision and improving their public speaking skills.
