The award ceremony for the 2nd Sun Yat-sen University student English lesson presentation contest took place on the south campus on the afternoon of April 9th. Prof. Chen Chunsheng, the Vice President, present and addressed a speech. Approximately 400 people attended the ceremony, including Prof. Deng Shaozhi, Director of the Academic Affairs Office, Prof. Wang Huaqiao, Deputy Director from the Graduate School, mentors from the Faculty of English Education as well as student recipients.
The contest generated 7 Special prizes, 25 First prizes, 109 Second prizes and 11 Excellent mentor prizes. At the ceremony, three representative groups of the Special Award Winners from Zhuhai Campus, East Campus and South Campus, gave their twenty minute English lesson demonstrations respectively.
Upon the completion of the lesson demonstrations, Prof. Chen Chunsheng praised highly of SYSU students' English proficiency and sense of humanity. He also recognized the achievements the Faculty of English Education has made in its teaching reforms in the past few years. Two courses of the department, the Advanced Business English and of the College English had been nominated consecutively in 2008 and 2009 for national excellence curriculums; moreover, a project on The Practice and Effects of the Internet-integrated classroom and Sustainable College English Teaching and Learning Reform" had won the Second Prize in the 6th National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education in 2009. Prof. Chen Chunsheng conferred awards upon the recipients for distinguish prize and excellent mentors.
The contest is an important move the university takes to implement the quality engineering advocated by the Ministry of Education, intensify the English teaching & learning reform and substantially improve the students' command of English language. Closely entwined with the actual curriculum teaching, the contest is well received by a majority of students who are eager to have the outcomes of their English learning accessed, a manifestation of the bearing of SYSU students. Hosted by the Faculty of English Education, the competition was supported by the Academic Affairs Office, the Graduate School and the Internet and Information Technology Center.
