On the afternoon of July 25, the opening ceremony of the 2014 Cross-Strait Postgraduate Summer School in Anthropology, co-hosted by Department of Anthropology, School of Sociology and Anthropology, Institute for South China Seas Regional Studies at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation For International Scholarly Exchange (CCKF), and sponsored by Graduate School of SYSU, was held on Zhuhai Campus of SYSU. The attendees included Professor Ma Guoqing and Associate Professor Yu Chengpu from Department of Anthropology of SYSU, Professor Shu-min Huang, Academician of Academia Sinica in Taiwan, Associate Research Fellow Shao-hua Liu from Institute of Ethnology at Academia Sinica in Taiwan, Assistant Professor Pin Wang from Department of Social Work at National Taipei University, and Ms. Yu-chen Chan from CCKF.
At the opening ceremony, Professor Shu-min Huang reviewed the summer school of last year and expressed his expectations for the students. Professor Ma Guoqing introduced the history of the summer school in the past five years and the sites for this year’s event — Zhuhai Campus of SYSU, Cuiheng Village in Zhongshan and Qi’ao Island in Zhuhai. Associate Research Fellow Shao-hua Liu explained the background and rules of the summer school and hoped the students would cherish the opportunity of study.
The postgraduate students having group discussions
This year’s summer school with the theme of “Health & Environment” invited Professor Shu-min Huang, Professor Nancy Chen from University of California Santa Cruz, Associate Research Fellow Shao-hua Liu, Assistant Professor Pin Wang, Assistant Professor Harry Yi-jui Wu from Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, Professor Chen Guang from Yunan University of Finance and Economics, Professor Ma Guoqing and Associate Professor Yu Chengpu to give lectures. Field research, workshop and group discussions were also organized to improve the students’ understanding of this area of study in terms of research topics and methodology.
The summer school received over 300 applications from 121 universities and selected 108 students from 64 universities, including 37 Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas students. They are from different academic backgrounds such as anthropology, sociology, history, Chinese, medicine, architecture and arts.
On the morning of August 3, the closing ceremony was held on Zhuhai Campus. Professor Ma Guoqing and Professor Shu-min Huang presented the certificates to the students. The 10-day summer school came to a successful end.
